Mission Save a Smile: Panama

Mission Save a Smile recently returned from Panama having provided 100+ hours of clinical care to those in need. Dr. Burseth and family were accompanied by dental student Seth Huiras and Bethany members Roger Theodos and Gavin Smith, as well as Rogers’s brother-in-law Dr. Jim Thompson. They continued their work with the Kuna on the San Blas Island of Achutupu and also returned to the rainforests of Panama to serve the Embera Drua.

In these remote indigenous communities dental decay is at epidemic proportions with abscessed teeth and dental pain occurring all too frequently.

Equipment engineered for portability is crucial to the success of Mission Save a Smiles outreach efforts as well as volunteers to help with preventative and restorative assisting roles.

Soon Mission Save a Smile hopes to build an additional air supply and dental delivery unit. This portable unit will be used for Mission Save a Smile's work with the Embera and also will be available for dentists interested in serving those in need at local community nursing homes and care facilities within McHenry County.
